A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
